Rye update

Just an update on the beer situation:

I racked to secondary on Sat., because I had a real long time in between bubbles in the airlock, so that tells me it is time.  When I cracked it open there was very little geeb floating on the top, there was a lot on the sides and a little on the top.  When I racked to the secondary the beer was pretty clear.  I am just getting a little gas in secondary but it probably won’t last too long and then it’s bottling time.

brew

The Rye ale fermentation has slowed down enough that I was able to put the double bubble airlock back in, so that it is easier to monitor the progress.  It has slowed down to approx. 40 sec. between bubbles.  I think that I will be racking to secondary early next week.

My dad has ordered a beer kit from Austin Homebrew for me to brew for him, a Hazelnut brown ale.   That should be arriving next week, just in time for when I rack.  This will be anew one so I am anxious to see how it works out.  Some day I will get to brew some beer for me, but then I don’t mind, I like the brewing.  Maybe just maybe I will get a sample out of his batch.  Although he does have to drive 6 hrs. to pick up the beer and who knows when he would make it out to get it.  HMMMMMMMM!!!!

HOF

It’s that time of year in Canton, OH.  It’s Hall of Fame week here in Canton, meaning food, activities, parades, hot air balloons and more food.  this weekend is the official start of the festivities with a food festival and hot air balloons and then next week is the rib burnoff for three days.  Pat Benatar is playing thurs. night and the band Seven Mary Three are playing wed. night.  then next Sat. is the Grand Parade and then at 6pm. is the HOF enshrinement of the HOF members.  This all leads up to the first football game of the season, which this year is Pittsburgh vs. New Orleans.

If anyone is in earshot of Canton, OH, you should try to make to some of the festivities, it’s a good time.  If your not in driving distance don’t bother trying to find a hotel in town or probably even Akron because they have been booked up probably for a year.   I on the other hand live one block off of the parade route, so luck me.  Either we stay up all night partying and then walk out the route at 4 or 5am to stake out claim with all of the other crazies or like my wife and some of her family they sleep until I wake them up then they wander out to the spots that I already save at 7.55am, parade starts at 8am. whichever way it is a good time.

Airlock

I had mentioned that I had to change airlocks on my Rye ale 12 hrs. after racking to primary, well here are a couple of pictures of what I have set up.

airlock

Then here is what the bucket of water looked like after 4-5 hrs of changing over.

overflow

Luckily the piece of plastic tube that I use to connect the hose to the lid has a big enough opening that it hasn’t gotten clogged up with “geeb” from the fermentation.  The hose does collect a lot of debris though.

The fermentation has slowed “a little” but is still more than a normal double bubble airlock could handle.

Custom bars

Hi everyone- we’re down to the last couple of days on the sale prices on  custom bars at Tim’s Custom Outdoor Bars.  It is a really great deal on a bar with a custom tile top.  You can get your name put on a top and even turn it into a Pub or Tavern.

The tiles are all handpainted, glazed and fired up to 1900 deg.

Here are a couple of pictures of a custom job that I did whre they wanted a “Pirate Bar”.  They’re last name is Borton so we did a treasure map on the top and used the letters of the name for islands and then we distressed the wood with a torch.  I think it turned out real good and they were real happy with it, which is always a plus.

New Batch

Well like I had mentioned in a previous blog that I had a mold issue. Good news, not my sanitation. It is a airborne mold that will happen no matter what, especially in my neck of the woods where it is humid and rainy and the fact that I brew in the basement. I also had a fan running to try to cool it down. It doesn’t even matter that the basement is finished and I have a dehumidifier running.

I brewed last night and I am having fantastic results already.ingredients Here are the ingredients for the Rye-PA that I make, minus the 9 lbs. of extract syrup ( 4 lbs. of amber and 5 lbs of pale ). It was hot without the fan, but hey you got a do what got a do, right?? If anyone wants my recipe I would be glad to post it, it original came from the Recipator website by Andy Bear Greider. His recipe used syrup and dry extract , but mine uses all syrup and works very well. It has been very smooth and a big hit with my neighbors.

inside the pot Just look at that color….It is a beautiful golden color and smells fantastic. What beer doesn’t when it is brewing, unless you haven’t started brewing yet. Come on…..what are you waiting for??? There are so many great sites out there for beginners and I hope that I can help since I’ve only been doing it for 7 months on my own. Since I am “new” my mistakes are still pretty fresh. Plus I love spreading the word and getting more people interested.

racking

Here is the fun part…racking you beer into the primary fermenter . As you can see it is just a 6.5 gallon Ale Pail bucket. The greatest piece of equipment for the homebrewer… the wort chiller. I don’t know what I would use to chill from boiling to 74 deg. if I didn’t have it.

Just so you know….as of this morning at 7:30am I had a real good aggressive fermentation and before I left for work at 9:00am I had to switch over from my double bubble airlock to a piece of tubing into a bucket of water, because I had foam in my airlock, all that in 12 hr period.

I will keep everyone posted on my progress with this one.

Opensource

I have finally discovered opensource apps.  Lately I just can’t get enough of them.  I know…I know.. what took me so long, I don’t know!!

I guess the fact that I finally got my 8 yr old G3 PB running the latest version of OSX, all thanks to a free version of Superduper, I have been stumbling upon all kinds of freeware sites.  The first one that I came across was Opensourcemac.org then today I was looking into text edit programs for Mac and I was doing some research on BBBedit and came across a forum that mentioned Freemacware.com, so there is another one that has a whole slew of programs.

I’m trying to find a good test editing program because I am trying to delv into the world of programing.  I am working on a couple of site re-designs into Wordpress and I mainly want to know what is going on.  Wordpress is great as far as making a blog site and adding cool features but i am working on business sites that deal with e-commerce, so I am trying to learn about xhtml, css and Php and how to use them.

Does anyone out there have any good suggestions??  I do have the W3 schools bookmarked and some sites on php and I have been a lot of work at the library as far as going through all the material that they have.

What about good text editors for mac??  Anyone??anyone??

Flash Gordon?????????

HUH!!!! WHA??????????

I just saw on the TV this morning that the Scifi channel is going to have anew series in the fall…. Flash Gordon.

Do we really need another version of Flash??

Wasn’t the 80’s movie enough already??

Why?? why?? why??

I don’t even think that the older generation that grew up with Flash Gordon even needs or wants a new Flash. I personally don’t get him…sure he is all Hero-y, but really, what does he bring to the table?? He’s no Superman or Batman!! He doesn’t even compete with the likes of older heroes like the Phantom or the Shadow, at least they had some abilities. Come On!!!

whew!!! I feel better now
