Great Restaurant in Cleveland

My parents came into town over the weekend, so my wife went on the hunt for something new and different.  Of course, first and foremost is beer…right???  she did a little digging online and found some good prospects, so then the next thing is food.  Now, we are both lovers of the good old grilled cheese sandwich, hence….Melt Bar and Grilled.

They have a fantastic on tap selection with some Stone Brewing, Dogfish Head and some pumpkin ales, her hook.  Then there is the idea of a restaurant just selling grilled cheese sandwiches.  Not just ordinary grilled cheese…NO… we are talking sandwiches with ham, bacon, bratwurst, eggs?? and chorizo sausage and every combination of those and more, 8+ different cheeses to boot.

If you are ever in Cleveland, OH and find yourself on Detroit Ave. west of the city go looking for this gem and give them a try.

Imperial stout

Yesterday I bottled a batch of beer, of course for someone else.  I brewed an Old Rasputin Imperial Stout clone, that I got from Austin Homebrew, and WOW!! what a beer.  It was so dark and what an aroma.  If you haven’t had Old Rasputin, it is also comparable to Thirsty dog Siberian Night if you can get your hands on it.  Lots of flavor and a high alcohol.

My O.G.(original gravity) was a wopping 1.092 and I finished up at 1.026.  this was also the first try at using the yeast from a previous batch.  I’d say that i had a pretty good conversion from it,  the recipe claimed a F.G. of 1.022.

Thank you Austin Homebrew for some great kits and great beer.

Making Money

It’s funny….everytime I brew,  my wife asks me “How can we make money doing this?”.  That’s a good question, how can a homebrewer make money doing what he loves to do??

Does anyone have an ideas??

Are there jobs out there for homebrewers??

I’m fairly new at homebrewing, but is there a way to make money with the skills or the knowledge??

Chocolate stout bottled

Man I wish I were kegging!!!

This beer smells fantastic and initial taste is very good.   Now I have to wait two to three weeks to drink it, dang.

I just brewed an Old Rasputin Imperial Stout this weekend and it is smelling really good,  that’s right I smell the bubbles at the airlock.  This beer had a ton of extract and was very thick during the boil and lots of hops.  The O.G. was 1.090, I think that is the highest I have had so far.

Chocolate Stout

My first try at a stout, much less a chocolate stout, has been fun.  I got this kit from  Austin Homebrew, very easy to follow and inexpensive.  this recipe actually has unsweetened cocoa, COOL!!!

This was also my first time using dry yeast instead of a Wyeast activator pack.  I just sprinkled the yeast on the wort after I got it cooled down to 75 deg..  I had actual fermentation taking place after on 4 hours, WOW!!  Usually I don’t see any activity for a day or two.  Fermentation was pretty much over at the 24 hour mark , another WOW!!  My wife is all concerned, because we have never had this before, but I just say that we let it go since this is new to us.  just let it sit in the primary for a couple more days and then go on from there.

I’ll keep you apprised on this batch

Bottling

Well we finally got around to bottling the Rye-PA.bottling

Everything went smoothly with the bottling operation, we even got an extra 6 out of it for ourselves. since this batch is for a neighbor i was hoping that I would get a little so that I know when it is safe to hand the beer over to them.

bottling

Here is my beautiful wife doing all the hard work, I just do the capping.

Now we just have to try to hold off the neighbors for two weeks while the brew carbonates.

Ghost Rider

Don’t!! just Don’t!!

I took the movie out my library and I am so glad that I didn’t pay a dime to see it.

I am a nut for movies that are turned into movies, I will watch anything.  I didn’t even mind the Hulk or Daredevil and I really can’t get into Affleck.  The Hulk at least had some interesting FX.  I can at least watch these movies and just about any other on tv numerous times, but I will never watch Ghost Rider again.

Cage makes me laugh in every part he plays whether it is a serious part or not, he is just a goof.  I guess it goes back to Raising Arizona, he is the same character in every movie he does.  He’s got this thing where he tries to be tough with some sort of accent and it turns out hokey everytime.  I don’t think that Ghost Rider is suppose to make me laugh.  He is suppose to be scary and cool, not goofy and comical.  For it being a Marvel comic I didn’t see Stan Lee anywhere in the movie and he always shows up, but I can’t watch it again just to look for him, sorry Stan.

Hey, it’s just my opinion

Bottling

Well it looks like I should be bottling by this weekend or by the beginning of next.  There is barely enough gas in the secondary to keep the airlock bubbling, at least as of this morning.  I could be wrong by the end of this day though, sometimes it goes in waves.  It will look like it is going to stop completely and then 8 hrs later there is gas.  Patience, I keep trying tell myself that.
